NAIDOC Week 2024 – Aboriginal Artefacts Tree Harvesting

This week is National NAIDOC Week, which is held each July to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

Quickway along with Transport for New South Wales recently welcomed Uncle Wayne, a Gadigal elder, and Uncle Mick, a Wiradjuri elder, at our Henry Lawson Drive Stage 1A project site, to undertake what we believe to be an infrastructure first – the removal of bark and wood from trees for the making of Aboriginal artefacts. The two Uncles made over 100 artifacts from trees destined for mulching, which they use to teach Aboriginal culture in primary schools. We look forward to seeing our pilot Aboriginal Artefact Tree Harvesting project replicated throughout the infrastructure building sector.
