Project Update – Joint Bay

FeaturedImage

Another successful joint bay installation by our Utilities Team in the Sydney Metro area. These joint bays consist of 4 large pre-cast elements, which are manufactured in the Newcastle region and transported to site on semi-trailers.

The overall weight of each joint bay is approximately 50T, with dimensions of 9m long, 3.2m wide and 3m deep. The excavation exercise consisted of removing 280T of spoil (9 truck & dog loads in total) in a very congested area. The 4 pre-cast elements for each joint bay were lifted into place by a 100T mobile crane.

Prior to the pre-cast segments installation, the high strength rock ground conditions were assessed by a qualified geotechnical engineer. A temporary works design was finalised and approved by a third party which removed the requirement to install complex trench shoring. This exercise accelerated the joint bay construction thereby significantly reducing the impact of the work on the local community.

The finished product will have capacity to hold 8 High Voltage cable joints. KUDOS to our team for managing deep excavations, high risk lift activities, road closures, interface with major stakeholders and the local council – and for completing the installation safely, efficiently, and effectively.
