Greens Bridge Replacement

Project Overview:

This bridge replacement project in Lismore involved constructing a new bridge parallel to the existing structure, forming new approaches with improved alignment to tie into the replacement bridge, and ultimately removing the old Greens Bridge and rehabilitating the surrounding area. These works were delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Bridges program.

Project Description:

Quickway were engaged by Lismore City Council as the principal contractor to construct a replacement bridge and demolish the existing Greens Bridge structure just outside Nimbin. The original bridge, built in 1930, had undergone numerous significant repairs over the years, and its deteriorating condition necessitated a complete replacement due to safety concerns.

Quickway replaced the aged wooden bridge with a modern concrete structure spanning over 38m over Goolmangar Creek. The three span structure was elevated approximately 11m over the creek level and 1.2m higher than the original bridge, creating increased flood immunity.

The new bridge was founded on 12 x 750mm fully cased bored piles up to 17m in depth. At the pier locations, headstocks were supported by column extensions over the creek.

The superstructure consisted of 21 prestressed concrete girders under reinforced concrete deck. The 7.8m wide deck accommodated low performance galvanised steel barrier rails.

The new bridge was tied in with approximately 800m of new road pavement and guardrail over the earthworks and drainage scope. At the completion of the new bridge, the old bridge was demolished.
