Project Overview:
Quickway were engaged by Byron Shire Council for the design and construction of a remediation solution for a failed embankment on Wilsons Creek Road damaged in the 2022 flood event.
The design and construct scope involved the development of the REF and Fisheries permit, design of retaining structure, drainage and road geometry for the 120m long project. Quickway were then further engaged to design and construct a 45m long extension to improve the safety of the tie in to existing road.
Quickway, through Geotech design partners CMW Geosciences and civil designer CCHD, designed a no-fines concrete block retaining wall up to 3.6m in height, founded on a mass concrete footing. The wall extension was designed as a soil nail and shotcrete wall which could be built from the road level.
Project Description:
The project is a design and construct of 170m of landslide remediation in Wilsons Creek in the Byron Shire Hinterland and associate road works. The area is characterised by a rural environment on a steep and winding road adjacent and pristine waterway.
The road services several rural communities and has no opportunity for detour or bypass roads.
Quickway have managed the community with great results and achieved widespread praise for their proactive approach.
The design solution is a combination of mass block gravity wall, rockfill and soil nail and shotcrete wall and incorporates several of the same elements as our Taylors Arm Road design solutions.
Quickway have partnered with Warner Group for the soil nail component of this project.
Quickway have also delivered the REF and Fishery Permit.
Key Challenges/Highlights:
The project was complete using a combination of night and day works to minimise the disruption to the community of the impactful construction.
Quickway maintained their exceptional environmental record, completing the high-risk work without incident adjacent the pristine marine environment.
Quickway provided timely and effective design and construction solutions for the soil nail wall extension which allowed the work to be complete from the road level.
