Project Description

Ipswich/Logan Interchange

Ipswich

Project Overview

The Ipswich/Logan Interchange is part of the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade project located to the Southwest of Brisbane. It consists of the upgrade of an approximately 2.2km section of interchange connecting the Ipswich and Logan motorways.

Project Description

Quickway’s scope of works included the widening of a stretch of motorway between Goodna and Gailes from four lanes to a minimum of six lanes, as well as the construction of bridges, concrete paving works, stormwater chambers, valve chambers, retaining walls, footpaths and V-drains.

Details

Number of Bridges: 11 bridges total – mainline bridges, single & multiple spans, emphasis on precast components

Number of Bridge Construction Concurrently: 5

Type of Bridge: Overbridge (main line & overpass)

Type of Superstructure: Super T girders, precast planks

Type of Substructure: In-situ/precast abutments and piers

Type of Parapets: Precast panels with in-situ stitch

Key Challenges

  • Interaction with numerous trades including piling contractors, precast suppliers and earthworks contractors.
  • Tight deadline due to delays with inclement weather.
  • Precasting the superstructure of the Gailes Pedestrian Footbridge. This innovation involved the bridge superstructure (beams, deck etc) being constructed on the ground and lifted onto the substructure (abutments, piers etc). This reduced the number of high risk activities such as lifts and concrete pours over a live carriageway, and saved time as the superstructure was constructed at the same time as the substructure.
