Ausgrid Cable Laying Project

Project Overview

This project consisted of underground cable laying work and associated works throughout all Sydney regions, Central Coast, and the Newcastle and Upper Hunter region.

Project Description

Quickway were engaged to undertake underground cable laying work including excavation by open trenching; horizontal, case and directional boring; the installation of conduits; the installation and laying of cable; temporary and permanent reinstatement; and associated works throughout all Sydney regions, Central Coast, and the Newcastle and Upper Hunter region.

Quickway also developed plans, obtained licencing and provided onsite traffic control for the duration of the works.

Kingsford and Waverley Zones Conduit and Cable Install:

  • Construction of new duct-bank
  • Cable installation and connections to transfer load from Clovelly Zone Substation to Kingsford Zone Substation
  • Cable installation and connections to transfer load from Clovelly Zone Substation to Waverly Zone Substation.

Rockdale Zone Substation:
Quickway were responsible for the overall upgrade of the Rockdale zone substation, including decommissioning the old switchyard and transferring all assets to the new substation building. This included a 132kV cable haul from the outside joint bay through existing conduits to new panels in the new substation building.

Port Hacking Zone Substation:
Quickway were responsible for the overall upgrade of the Port Hacking zone substation, including decommissioning the old switchyard and transferring all assets to the new substation building. This included a 132kV cable haul from the outside switchyard through existing conduits to new panels in the new substation building.

Canterbury Zone Substation:
Quickway were awarded several electrical and structural concrete packages in order to upgrade the Canterbury Zone substation. The scope of works included:

  • 132kV TX1, TX2 and TX3 concrete footings and cable install
  • 11kV western duct-line conduit bank and cable install
  • 33kV Summer hill duct-line and ripple filter conduit install
  • Upgrade of the 132kV 906 feeder excavation and cable install.

Key Challenges

  • Interaction with numerous trades including Ausgrid technicians and jointers
  • Working within a live substation
  • Working under an Ausgrid network outage with key emphasis on timeframes per work task and scopes
  • Setting up for cable hauling inside a live 132kV substation yard.
