Upgrade of Caddens Road

Project Overview:

Upgrade of Caddens Road between the intersection of Gipps Street / Kent Road to Claremont Creek transitioning from rural to urban standard, providing a widened single-carriageway road, a roundabout at White Cedar Avenue and a new bus stop, shared pathway and pedestrian facilities.

Project Description:

The site is in Western Sydney within Penrith Local Government Area in the suburb of Claremont Meadows. The site is approximately 5kms south-east of Penrith and 45kms west of the Sydney Business District (CBD). The scope of works includes:

  • Widening of Caddens Road from its existing condition to provide 2 x 3.2m lanes, 2 x 3.2m parking lanes and shared path.
  • Utility relocations for Electrical (Endeavour Energy – both overhead and underground), Water, Sewer, Telco (Telstra, NBN) and Gas (Jemena), in order for the road widening.
  • Installation and commissioning of new Utility assets (as above)
  • Working around large diameter Sydney Water assets in roadway
  • Construction of a single lane mountable roundabout including splitter islands with pedestrian walkthroughs on all three legs.
  • Bridge extension – construction of a cantilever structure to the north for the provision of a 2.5m wide pedestrian footpath on Caddens Road across the existing bridge/culvert at Claremont Creek.
  • Installation of new bus stop adjacent to the roundabout.
  • Installation of stormwater drainage along the length of project
  • Line marking on the approach to the Gipps Street traffic signals (eastbound) to include a 60m right turn lane to Caddens Road with the kerbside lane to be through and left.
  • Pavement build-up for the road widening on both sides of road.
  • Asphalt works, including mill & re-sheet sections.

Key Challenges/Highlights:

  • Early identification of all utility clashes (Site Investigation)
  • Community engagement managed by Quickway through construction phases and keeping the community informed through daily support/interaction.
  • Get engineering specialist report and approved method statement for working near 900mm & 450mm diameter water mains
  • WHS audits carried out not only internally but also by Office of Federal Safety Commissioner and client representatives, all with satisfactory outcomes.
  • Environmental controls all implemented as per EMP and relevant regulations, with no incidents taking place.
